Role Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and proactive HSS Manager to lead health, safety, and sustainability initiatives on a major Rail construction, tunnelling, or infrastructure programme. The successful candidate will have a strong operational background and a proven track record of delivering assurance, driving safety campaigns, and embedding best practices across complex construction projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage health and safety operations across the programme, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and industry standards.
  • Review and sign off Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
  • Conduct incident investigations and produce detailed reports.
  • Develop and monitor HSS KPIs and performance metrics.
  • Design and deliver toolbox talks and HSS campaigns to promote a positive safety culture.
  • Support and interface with engineering and management teams across all levels.
  • Drive occupational health initiatives and ensure integration into project delivery.
  • Produce assurance and technical reports/presentations using MS Office and Teams.
  • Apply a broad range of assurance tools and techniques to monitor and improve HSS performance

Required Experience & Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years of operational Health & Safety experience on major construction, tunnelling, or infrastructure programmes.
  • At least 2 years in a managerial or senior advisory HSS role.
  • Strong understanding of risk management, occupational health, and HSS regulations and best practices.
  • Proven ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple activities effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Teams.
  • Experience in delivering assurance activities across large-scale programmes.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
  • Membership of IOSH or similar professional body.
  • Experience in sustainability or environmental management is a plus.
